Celebration of IDY in Serbia

The International Day of India (IDY) in Serbia was jointly celebrated by the Embassy of India, Belgrade with the Government of Serbia and United Nations Country Team in more than 52 cities and municipalities of Serbia on June 21.  The IDY was celebrated in Belgrade at the Studentski Park and Kalemegdan Fortress overlooking the confluence of Rivers Danube and Sava.  The dignitaries present on the occasion, among others, included H.E. Mr. Zoran Djordjevic, State Secretary, Ministry of Defence; H.E. Ms. Irena Vojackova-Sollorano, UN Resident Coordinator; and Mr. Aleksandar Jankovic, Head of Asia, Australia and the Pacific Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, etc. Ms. J Meenakshi of the Meenakshi Yoga Centre in Chennai (India) led the morning exercises.

The IDY celebrations also included kirtans, seminars and workshops on yoga, ayurveda and homeopathy.  Yoga is popular in Serbia and all streams of Yoga are taught and practiced despite the absence of Indian community in the country. Wide pre-event publicity in the mainstream media resulted in creating awareness of the benefits of yoga among the 7m population of Serbia.
